Congrats on cancelling your WoW subscription. I have no idea how I managed to graduate magna cum laude while playing the Age of Wonders games, but I did. I was a master at last-minute papers, but even I admit the quality of my work near the end of college was going down-hill. I still play games, but now days my bigger time waster is playing guitar. The trick with me is find a way to make my work feel like play, but I always lose focus, so I also have to have multiple projects going on.

BC, I'd planned on it being the original, but we no longer have a VHS player (gasp) and we hadn't replaced the set with DVDs. I borrowed the set from a family member and was slightly disappointed it wasn't the original. But, it is still Star Wars, so it didn't kill the evening. ;)

That's a really good procrastination story with that first novel. :)

Okay, the important question is: the original Star Wars trilogy, or the new ones?

I'm really good a procrastination, so I've done some fun stuff rather frequently. I've skipped a class before to finish a reading a book, and I've gone for a long day on the beach rather than writing an essay. But the most fun I've had was right after college: writing that first novel instead of looking for a job. Luckily, now I can both be gainfully employed and a writer.

Squee-worthy author? Jasper Fforde. I'm even willing to pay full hardcover price for the ebook versions of his books. He's brilliant.

I love fantasy that has something new to offer. I've been reading the genre for over 30 years and I love new twists on magic systems or social castes or whatever. And if it's all done while keeping the people real, even better.

So, it sounds like I'm one of your readers!

Actually, it sounds like I might be your ideal reader. I love dark stories that dig into the scarier recesses of someone's soul to see just what what they're made of. While I do read the occasional light and fluffy book, all of my favorites, all of my obsessive re-reads are those the look in the dark corners.

I don't have a lot of instant-squee books. But lately I've been excited about alternate history novels with fantasy elements. I picked up the first three Temeraire books by Naomi Novik without a read through simply because she combined two of my favorite things--Napoleonic-era Navy battles (I love Horatio Hornblower) and dragon riding (I love Pern).

Honestly, I can't write without humor, even if it's just wry observations on the situation my characters find themselves in. It's one of my defenses against the dark, and it certainly has made its way into my writing.

As for what I enjoy reading -- wow, that's all over the map. But I don't read things that are too dark. If I can't see how the author can possibly get the characters through without leaving someone broken . . . I'll stop reading. There's enough of that in real life. I prefer to believe there's hope.

Thanks Jennifer. You should check it out. It gets a little hairy with fantasy names sometimes, but that's been the biggest challenge. Dragon is definately better than the base version that comes with windows. I was training them both up at the same time, Dragon at work and the windows version at home. I still like to try and type, I don't want to lose the skill, but it's really nice to choose speech when the discomfort would impact the writing.

Thanks Sam, I sure hope so.
The software requires a training period to increase accuracy, so it also needs patience. it took me a good two weeks to get Dragon running properly at work. The funniest part, is you can do training exercises to increase the accuracy. I was sitting at my desk one morning, reading Alice In Wonderland to my computer. :)

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing your numbers. It is interesting (and inspiring) to see how the w1/s1 challenge has improved your stats.

I'm sorry to hear about your broken hand. I've been struggling with severe tendonitis, so I can imagine the pain. I've wondered about speech-to-text when I've been unable to put hand to keyboard - perhaps I should check it out.

Good luck in 2012!
